Training for Life is a charity that seeks to tackle the enduring issue of unemployment and poverty through an entrepreneurial approach. We work with some of the most vulnerable and excluded groups within society; people from diverse backgrounds, who, for whatever reason, have faced barriers to work and, consequently, become trapped in poverty.

Achieving results…

Started in 1995, Training for Life has made a name for itself by taking people who have been unemployed for too long and teaching them how to learn, cope, compete and thrive in the workplace.

Since 1995, Training for Life has:

  • Returned over 13,000 people, previously long-term unemployed, back to full time education or employment
  • Created more than 150 new jobs as a business in its own right
  • Created social enterprises like the Hoxton Apprentice and Dartmouth Apprentice restaurant, that train people in real jobs, providing them with a wage, reference and an industry qualification
  • Reinvested 100% of profits from social enterprises back into training.

Training for Life delivers a ‘learning journey’ through its training and apprenticeship programmes in Prospect Centres – enterprising learning communities that provide experience of work in industry-specific social enterprises.

The Prospect Centre concept is based upon partnerships between industry, local regeneration agencies, and the charity. Each Prospect Centre has a particular industry focus, with customised vocational training, and a key element to each centre is its social enterprise.

Currently Prospect Centres are located across London and in Devon:

  • Training for Life Hoxton, with a hospitality industry focus
  • Training for Life Westminster, the Centre for Independent Living supports disabled people gain greater independence
  • Training for Life Dartmouth, one of the newest Prospect Centres provides temporary accommodation for homeless people, alongside a social enterprise restaurant, Dartmouth Apprentice
  • Training for Life Downside, with a fitness industry focus providing a local resource for young people and their families
